Mathematics

The primary aim of the department is to raise an appreciation and love of Mathematics in all students so that they feel free to explore and learn skills that are transferable across many academic disciplines. This means equipping all our students with the numerical skills, enhanced problem solving abilities, and logical processes that will benefit them far beyond the time span they will spend in school.

The Maths Department of Sri Lankan School Muscat Comprises of 15 well qualified teachers. A variety of teaching strategies are used such as mental arithmetic, word problems, hands-on puzzles, games, projects and variety of computer software to reinforce and consolidate basic skills and to prepare students effectively.

After completing their IGCSE students can either chose to study A2 Mathematics (Single A-Level) or Further Mathematics (two A-Level). The Edexcel International A-level curriculum is followed, meaning that A2 students take six modules over two years; four on core topics such as calculus and trigonometry, and two on applications such as statistics or mechanics. Further Mathematics students complete the A2 in Year 12 and then study six more modules in Year 13; three extended core modules, and three further applications. The Mathematics department continues to go from strength to strength as it produces world ranking students each year in Mathematics.

The Department also enters students each year for Australian Maths Competition (AMC) and varies different National and International Maths competitions. All students are eligible for these, but only those who show aptitude and commitment are entered.
